“Policing That Protects Even Island Life”
Hwang Dong-seok, Chief of Jindo Police Station, Declares Field- and Prevention-Centered Responsible Policing
In Jindo, surrounded by islands and the sea, policing goes beyond simple incident response—it serves as the final safeguard protecting the everyday lives of local residents.
As the New Year 2026 approaches, Chief Hwang Dong-seok, who leads the Jindo Police Station, emphasized a system of responsible policing centered on field operations and prevention, stating, “Policing that is truly ‘Jindo-like’ means approaching the lives of residents first.”
During an interview with Haenam News conducted on the morning of December 31 at the Jindo Police Station, Chief Hwang spoke in a calm yet firm tone about his career in policing, his impressions upon assuming his post in Jindo, and the direction he plans to pursue for local public safety.
Chief Hwang has served in key positions within the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency, including Chief of Jeongeup Police Station, Head of the Autonomous Police Division, and Head of the Crime Prevention and Response Division, gaining extensive experience across both field operations and policy-making roles.
“I have always placed the safety of the public as my highest priority,” he said. “I have worked to build a police force that earns public trust through prevention-focused policing tailored to local conditions and through active communication with residents.”
Regarding his appointment as Chief of Jindo Police Station, he remarked, “Given the unique characteristics of island communities and the living conditions of residents, I feel an even greater sense of responsibility. I will do my utmost to protect the lives and property of residents through customized policing activities that reflect the realities of island regions.”
Reflecting on his first encounter with Jindo, he said, “I felt deeply impressed by how the islands and the sea blend harmoniously, carrying within them the daily lives of the residents. It reminded me once again that safeguarding this peaceful routine is the very mission of the Jindo Police.”
Chief Hwang’s definition of “Jindo-style policing” was clear:
“Policing that accurately understands regional characteristics and naturally permeates the everyday lives of residents.”
He explained that strengthening preventive activities that take into account peak tourist seasons, seasonal changes, and the unique living environment of island communities—while never overlooking even minor risks or inconveniences—represents the most realistic and effective approach for Jindo.
When asked about the most important role police must play to ensure residents’ peaceful daily lives, he pointed to a proactive approach.
“Rather than responding after incidents occur, it is crucial to identify and prevent small risks in everyday life in advance,” he emphasized. “Listening carefully to residents’ voices and eliminating sources of anxiety beforehand is the starting point for a peaceful daily life.”
He also expressed appreciation for the officers and staff of the Jindo Police Station who continue to serve diligently in the field.
“The sense of responsibility and dedication of each and every one of you is the greatest force protecting the safety of Jindo residents,” he said. “As chief, I will listen more closely to voices from the field and strive to create working conditions in which officers can serve with pride.”
In closing, Chief Hwang delivered a message to the residents of Jindo:
“As Chief of Jindo Police Station, I extend my sincere greetings to all residents. I will devote myself to field-centered policing so that each and every resident may enjoy a safe and peaceful daily life. We will always listen to your voices and repay your trust with action.”
Policing that embraces both the unique nature of island communities and the everyday lives of the people—
attention is now focused on how Chief Hwang Dong-seok’s vision of “Jindo-style responsible policing” will protect each day of life in Jindo throughout 2026.
