역사와 전통, 그리고 청정해역이 공존하는 완도에 새로운 치안 책임자가 부임했다.

이범형 완도경찰서장은 취임과 동시에 “완도의 평온한 일상은 반드시 지켜내야 할 가치”라며, 현장 중심·예방 중심의 책임 치안을 분명히 선언했다.

경찰대학 12기로 임용된 이 서장은 그동안 광주·전남 지역을 중심으로 생활안전, 정보, 112 상황업무 등 경찰 조직의 핵심 부서를 두루 거쳤다.

특히 광주청과 전남청 112종합상황실, 정보부서 근무 경험을 통해 사건 발생 초기 대응과 지역 안전을 총괄하는 실무를 담당하며, 위기 상황에서의 판단력과 조정 능력을 쌓아왔다.

이범형 서장은 완도 부임 소감에 대해 “자연환경만큼이나 공동체 의식이 살아 있는 완도에서 근무하게 된 것을 큰 영광으로 생각한다.”며 “완도경찰 가족들과 함께 군민의 안전을 책임지게 된 만큼, 막중한 책임감으로 서장의 역할을 다하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

섬과 바다가 어우러진 완도를 처음 마주한 순간에 대해서는 “아름다움에 감탄함과 동시에, 이 평온한 일상을 반드시 지켜야겠다는 사명감이 함께 들었다.”며 “육지와는 다른 지역적 특성을 충분히 이해한 맞춤형 치안이 필요하다”고 강조했다.

이 서장이 말하는 ‘완도다운 치안’의 핵심은 현장과 예방이다.

그는 “완도는 주민과 관광객이 함께 생활하는 지역인 만큼, 사건이 발생한 뒤 대응하는 치안이 아니라 위험 요소를 미리 살피고 차단하는 치안이 중요하다.”며 “주민들이 ‘경찰이 가까이 있다.’, ‘우리 동네를 잘 안다.’고 느낄 수 있도록 현장 중심의 예방 활동을 강화하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

주민의 일상을 지키기 위한 경찰의 가장 기본적인 역할로는 법과 원칙에 따른 공정한 법 집행을 꼽았다.

이범형 서장은 “경찰의 모든 업무는 기본에 충실해야 하며, 공정하고 엄정한 법 집행이 신뢰의 출발점”이라며 “특히 관계성 범죄, 아동·청소년 대상 범죄에 대해서는 피해자 보호를 최우선으로 삼아 초기부터 단호하게 대응하겠다.”고 분명히 했다.

현장에서 묵묵히 임무를 수행하고 있는 완도경찰서 직원들에게는 깊은 신뢰와 존중의 메시지를 전했다.

그는 “경찰관 한 사람 한 사람의 성실함이 곧 완도경찰의 신뢰”라며 “서로를 존중하고 배려하는 조직문화 속에서 원칙과 윤리를 지키는 자랑스러운 완도경찰이 되어 달라”고 당부했다. 이어 “저 역시 서장으로서 솔선수범하겠다.”고 다짐했다.

마지막으로 이범형 서장은 완도군민들에게 이렇게 약속했다.

“군민 여러분이 체감할 수 있는 안전한 완도를 만들기 위해 완도경찰 모두가 최선을 다하겠습니다. 법과 질서를 지키는 것이 가장 편리하고 안전하다는 믿음을 드리는 치안을 실천하겠습니다. 언제나 군민 곁에서 신뢰받는 완도경찰이 되겠습니다.”

완도의 평온한 일상을 지키겠다는 이범형 서장의 각오가, 현장 속 실천으로 이어질지 주목된다.

Lee Beom-hyeong Takes Office as Wando Police Chief, Declares Responsibility for ‘Wando-Style Policing’
A new leader has taken charge of public safety in Wando, where history, tradition, and pristine seas coexist.
Upon assuming office, Wando Police Chief Lee Beom-hyeong declared, “The peaceful daily life of Wando must be protected at all costs,” clearly pledging to pursue responsibility-based policing centered on on-site presence and crime prevention.
Chief Lee was commissioned as part of the 12th class of the Korean National Police University and has since served mainly in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, working across key police divisions including public safety, intelligence, and 112 emergency operations.
In particular, his experience in the 112 Integrated Situation Rooms and intelligence units of the Gwangju and Jeonnam Provincial Police Agencies allowed him to oversee early incident response and coordinate overall regional safety, honing his judgment and coordination skills in crisis situations.
Regarding his appointment to Wando, Chief Lee stated, “It is a great honor to serve in Wando, a place where a strong sense of community thrives alongside its beautiful natural environment.” He added, “Together with the Wando Police family, I will carry out my duties as chief with a profound sense of responsibility for the safety of our residents.”
Recalling his first impression of Wando, where islands and the sea come together, he said, “Along with admiration for its beauty, I felt a strong sense of duty to protect this peaceful way of life.” He emphasized, “Given Wando’s unique characteristics, different from inland areas, tailored policing that fully reflects these local conditions is essential.”
According to Chief Lee, the core of “Wando-style policing” lies in the field and in prevention.
“Wando is a place where residents and tourists coexist,” he explained. “Rather than responding only after incidents occur, it is crucial to identify and eliminate risk factors in advance.” He continued, “We will strengthen field-oriented preventive activities so that residents feel the police are close by and truly understand their neighborhoods.”
As the most fundamental role of the police in safeguarding daily life, Chief Lee highlighted fair law enforcement based on law and principle.
“All police work must remain faithful to the basics, and fair and strict enforcement of the law is the starting point of public trust,” he said. “In particular, for relationship-based crimes and crimes against children and youth, we will prioritize victim protection and respond swiftly and decisively from the earliest stage.”
He also conveyed deep trust and respect for the officers of the Wando Police Station who diligently carry out their duties on the ground.
“The sincerity of each individual officer directly translates into trust in the Wando Police,” Chief Lee said. “I ask that you become proud Wando police officers who uphold principles and ethics within an organizational culture of mutual respect, consideration, and open communication.” He added, “As chief, I will lead by example.”
In closing, Chief Lee delivered a promise to the people of Wando.
“To create a truly safe Wando that residents can feel in their daily lives, all members of the Wando Police will do our utmost,” he said. “We will practice principled policing that convinces people that obeying law and order is the safest and most convenient choice. We will always stand by the residents as a trusted police force.”
